Well, Ben did a mini-post the other day about the phenomenon of experiencing a hurricane in Ohio. For our Ohio friends they are likely sick of hearing about the drama of this experience (or of having to live it), but for those of you that are not here, I thought you might appreciate knowing what is happening at home. Of course the irony of this storm being named Ike hasn’t escaped me.

At any rate, my husband and his friend Jeremy treated Cortney and I to watching the kids so that we could have some girl time away. This was Sunday for lunch. We headed to Outback where we had a fabulous lunch while the lights flickered on and off a few times. It was really windy so we weren’t really surprised but it was a bit unusual. After lunch we proceeded to head towards the mall. On our way, a 6 foot sign blew across the highway – along with a lot of additional debris. We headed into a Sam’s Club for a few items where the lights almost immediately went off so we headed for home. The drive home was treacherous and I can honestly say I have never seen anything quite like that.

We hung at Cortney and Jeremy’s place for awhile as they have a basement that is much better for hanging out in storms. We then proceeded home for a LONG night without power. Just when you think you have life figured out with a newborn the good Lord throws in some new challenges. Changing diapers by candlelight, pumping without power, eating, etc. We managed (thank you to the Callahan family tradition of headlamps) but it wasn’t anything I would wish on anyone. I should also mention that other than the well being of my son I was near tears thinking of the 30+ meals I had made at 6 months pregnant and stored in our freezer for those “way too tired to cook” days. All that food, all that labor.

Thankfully, our power was restored Monday around 3 pm (the freezer didn’t have to be purged like the refrigerator did). No such luck for many of our friends and family. Including our neighbors across the street (and I mean directly across the street) that still don’t have power (Wed-5pm). We took dinner to them last night as a peace offering and offered up a grill as they cooked all of their defrosting meat. It was a great chance to get to know them although it might have been nicer under different circumstances.

At any rate, we are doing well. Glad we live in a country where there is power and determined not to take it for granted any time soon! Thank you for your continued prayers for our well-being.
